Who Do You Say That I Am

Who is this Jesus character? This is the biggest, most fundamental question in the Christian faith. Who do you say that he is?

We're all pretty tired, weighed down with the whole lockdown thing, and a bit sick of Zoom. So we're going to try to make this a bit more reflective, and a bit less head-y.

Tuesday 14/9/21 at 7:30 - 9pm on Zoom.

Jesus and the Syrophoenician Woman

From there he set out and went away to the region of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know he was there. Yet he could not escape notice, but a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately heard about him, and she came and bowed down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, of Syrophoenician origin. She begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

The Good Life and the Gospel

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. ‘Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?’ He said to him, ‘ “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.’
The Good News According to Matthew 22:34-40

Salvation and Community

We can therefore say that salvation is essentially this: the restoration of community. It is social by nature. People reach their destiny and thus God, when they are united with God in worship and reconciled to each other.

Stefan Paas. Pilgrims and Priests: Christian Mission in a Post-Christian Society

What does salvation mean? What relationship, if any, does it have with community?

Two By Two

Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place.

Community of the Spirit

There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28

What does it mean to be a "community of the Spirit"? What would it be like to be in a community in which the artificial divisions which kept us apart were broken apart by unity in Christ?
