What is Taize?
Taize is the name of a commnunity in Taize, a village in the south of Burgundy in France.
The community was founded as a centre for reconciliation in 1940, by Brother Roger, a Swiss Reformed
pastor. The community has over a hundred brothers, with an associated community of women.
Because of the thousands of young people who flock there every year
from all around the world, it developed a style of worship which involves meditative silence, chanting,
bible readings, and prayer.
Some of the songs are in Latin, and some are in other non-English languages, but a lot of them are in English. This is because of the global
nature of the community. People really do come there from everywhere, and singing in Latin was a way of ensuring
that no-one was excluded, no one language was priviledged over another. Some people find it takes a bit of
getting used to, but it is worth persevering, and allowing the words to move from your head to your heart
