Anger. Lust. Divorce. Swearing oaths. A weekend gone horribly wrong? Or was Vader right?
In Matthew 4:1-11Jesus intensifies the commandments, so that "don't murder people" becomes something more like "don't be someone who wants to murder people." It names something important, and a possible reading of it as "do unto others as you would have done unto you" has been appropriated by our culture with thinkers as diverse as Kant and Buber giving their own versions of it. But what does it mean in a shame culture? What is the role of grace? What is the good news here exactly?
